It's Not a Mac - Our Windows Testing Part 2A

COW Blogs : walter biscardi's Blog : It's Not a Mac - Our Windows Testing Part 2A
This is just a quick update than full blown testing, hence the "Part 2A" title instead of Part 3.

I left the Dell running all Monday night and it finally downloaded the Adobe Production Premium CS 5.5 package. Installation went fine, then installation of the AJA Kona LHi drivers and the AJA Adobe CS 5.5 plug-in went perfectly fine.

After all installations everything appeared to work just fine, we had image from the system to our Flanders Scientific monitor via the Kona LHi. And that was about the extent of it for today. A new television pilot is occupying my days right now so as soon as I get that done, I'll get busy with the Dell.

However, there IS a new wrinkle to our testing. I was approached by another company to test out a fully customized Windows system. We're working out the details over the next couple of weeks and once everything is finalized, I'll update with the details. Will be nice to have two Windows systems to compare and contrast.

That's it for now, short update! More testing soon!

I build my own.. always. One of mine has an EVGA SR-2 Mobo with 2) 6 core Xeon processors, 24 gigs ram, 16 tb Raid with RS2BL080 raid card in a Monster Xigmatek case that even has a hard drive dock built into the top of it. Also have plenty of USB3 ports. I would take issue with you about graphics cards. Just about ANY of the GTX cards does an amazing job. At the moment that is my weakest link. Using an older GTX470, but haven't really noticed any problems or lack of speed/rendering. I may upgrade to a GTX 680 for about $500, but don't see the need at the moment. I hope you get a chance to use some NICE hardware to give you a better view of the "dark side" of PC world! Another GREAT case is the Coolermaster HAFX. Both this case and my Xigmatek have LARGE, relatively slower speed fans that move a LOT of air... QUIETLY. Either of these is a joy to use... easy to get into, solidly built AND nice to look at.

Walter,

I just upgraded my studio and got a Z800 2 x 5650 (12 cores @ 2.66 Ghz). HP just announced the Z820 so you can find these machines at a decent price.

I'm running Adobe Prduction Premium CS5.5, Avid Symphony 6 and avid DS 10.5, all in the same box, doing web, broadcast and film projects. It's truly an amazing system. I had a similar system running on a 12 core mac pro with Adobe, Symphony and Smoke. I end up with the Z800 as all high end graphics (quadro4000..etc) i tested seem to perform much better on the PC side. Macpro is now being used only in my PT HD mixing room. Good luck with the transition.

The second machine is not an HP. They have not contacted me about testing.
