Blackmagic approves GPU Expander, good for all Mac Pro users.

COW Blogs : walter biscardi's Blog : Blackmagic approves GPU Expander, good for all Mac Pro users.
This is HUGE! BMD has approved an expansion chassis that allows up to four GPUs to be added to a Mac Pro or any manner of PCIe cards. Since Apple won't give us any more than four slots in a single machine, this is a HUGE addition for folks like me who are trying to install Davinci Resolve, ProTools and Final Cut Studio in a single Mac Pro that's also running on a SAN. Too many cards needed to do this in a single Mac Pro, so this expansion chassis could very well be the ticket.

I've got my VAR looking into this rig now and we'll report back if we end up getting it installed.

According to the folks who make the product, dual GPUs is one of the uses of the box. Hoping to catch up with them at NAB if they are there to find out more.

We never explored this at all since we ended up with dual systems in our theater. One for ProTools and one for Resolve so we didn't need the expansion chassis.

Hi Walter,

Any news on this? (can you use 2 GPU's for Resolve for example through it?)

Hi Walter,

This is great news indeed. Do you know if it will enable multi-GPU / multi-CUDA rendering with Resolve? I'd love to try 2 GTX 285 cards on software resolve (and with a redrocket for red projects).

Best wishes,

Toby

Pricing is in the $2200 range. A bit steep but still much cheaper than a 2nd 12 Core Mac. Heard back from the BMD engineers and have more information on how they used the chassis. Sounds like it's very effective.

Will pass along more info as it becomes available and definitely if we end up putting this in our shop.
