Hangin' with The Zelin

COW Blogs : walter biscardi's Blog : Hangin' with The Zelin
The incomparable Bob Zelin arrived at our new facility tonight. I figured we must be doing good if the first thing he said was "Wow!" when he entered the lobby. I just LOVE hanging with The Z because he's a great combination old school engineer and computer geek who is really into all the emerging technologies. That's such a rare combination because most old school engineers just want to talk about VTRs, routers and monitors and don't want to hear about all this computer driven "crap."

Bob loves the old school stuff but knows the new "crap" is what's driving our market today. He knows so much about the convergence old and new technologies and how best to take advantage of both to economically achieve the goals we've set out for our next chapter.

So now after a filling dinner and some great conversation, it's time to rest up for a VERY long weekend of wiring and installation of our entire new nerve center. Based on dinner, I can tell you we're gonna work hard and laugh even harder. I guess I'm going to have to do a revised article on Engineering the Bob Zelin Way. This is a whole step up from the last time we got together.

I can't say it enough, whether you're setting up a single suite, a couple of edit systems or an entire facility, you need to find someone like a Bob Zelin to help you along the way. I've been at this 20 years now and while I could plan out the engineering myself, why would I when someone with Bob's knowledge is so readily available. So find a good VAR, a good engineer who can help you get set up with a good stable system from the get go. And if it doesn't work, well then they have to come fix it.

They might not have the classic rock star looks as Bob, but at least they'll get you going. Man it's gonna be a fun weekend! Thank you Ron, Kathlyn and the entire Creative Cow Team for introducing me to the one and only Bob Zelin!

Well, I can't say for sure how long Bob's been out of NY, but Post Production engineering here is A LOT more boring without him in the mix. We miss you in NY Bob, but I'm glad I can still read your thoughts on CC every once in a while! -Tom Tortoriello

P.S. VPR3's with Zeus TBC's RULED! :-) On a related note, I'm still missing 1/2 the fingerprints on my right thumb from trying to stop a scanner on a VPR2-B circa 1989 :-)

When I first started my career, I was able to call upon two engineering folks who helped me cope with the technology overhead associated with working in an online edit bay. One was Mike Martin, the studio technician from college. The other was a freelance engineer named Harry Boettcher who went back decades in the NY broadcast industry. He was a treasure trove of stories from old timey time and helpful tips and tricks for servicing Ampex video gear.

On several occasions he walked me through replacing scanner motor brushes and other components of the VPR-80. If you could not do an insert edit on the correct field, then the other half million dollars worth of gear was worthless. Back in those days, you could spend 50% of your time doing basic engineering and tracing cables while trying to actually edit video.

While things are now digital, a facility like Walter's no doubt still has miles of cables and an organized easy to manage system remains crucial.

Glad you are able to use Mr Z's talents. Part of knowing how to do your job well includes knowing when to call upon someone who knows more than you do. Those people are the resources we need in this business.

Best of luck in the new facility.

He's the best. He did my Final Share installation in Los Angeles. There's nothing he doesn't know!

I can just see him getting mobbed for autographs walking down a street in LA. People would just assume he's part of a classic rock band.

And now that I think about it, Bob looks like a very SPECIFIC rock star. I know Bob doesn't believe in computers, so make sure he sees this.

Yep, hangin' with The Z.

I know that I have told the story before, Walter, but I'll never forget when -- in the early days of Creative COW -- Kathlyn came into my office telling me there's a guy who's a know-it-all and is insulting people telling them that he's going to slap them up side the head and come eat their dog if they keep going the way they are.

I went into the site and saw that she was talking about Bob Zelin. I knew him from his tenure as arguably the most knowledgeable guy in the world on Avid. I looked at her when I saw it was Bob and exclaimed like a kid in a candy store: "You mean Bob Zelin is coming to the COW? The site's really working, Kathlyn! Bob Zelin is coming to the COW."

Back in the early days of Media 100, there were few people I wouldn't argue with but there was one guy I never wanted to tangle with and that was Bob Z. He knows more than any 10 people in this industry combined. It has been a great honor to have him here and I love how people are finally getting his sense of humor and consider it a great honor to (as they now call it) be "Zelinized."

;o)

Have fun Walter. And we will have all the goodies and magazines, etc., for your grand-opening-mini-expo-visitron-open-house-event. Kathlyn and I have been digging out some great giveaways, etc., for you and Rebecca.

Best regards,

Wooooooo! Bessie Swag! If you find one, send along an 8 x 10 or larger photo of the two of you. Need to have that framed and on the wall. You two have been a HUGE part of all that we have accomplished.

And to be Zelined is to have a badge of honor.....

Bob doesn't just LOOK like a rock star. Get him to tell you about playing keyboards on one of the most epic tours in rock and roll history, KISS Alive in 1977!
