Dan Desmet brought our new LM-2460W to the office today, but as I found out, it's actually the first of the new LM-2461W models! Lots of new stuff and upgrades to share. This is one cool monitor! Please bear with the iPhone video and audio quality, it's all we had in the shop today, but I really wanted Dan to tell you some of the super cool features of this monitor.

Diego, it is true that different technologies will never be a perfect match, but I must say that the LM-2461W is used by a lot of people for color grading of DCP material. Differences between the two technologies would be most noticeable if viewing content on both in the same room at the same time, but if you color grade on one and then view on the other at separate times you would be hard pressed to have the impression of any significant difference.

If you purchase a cheap projector chances are it will not match the high-end digital cinema projectors any better than the 2461W. The bigger question for you is one of workflow. The LM-2461W has a DCI P3 color space selection and a handful of people use this for monitoring of content destined for DCP deliverables. However, what still seems to be a more common workflow is to grade/monitor in Rec 709 and then use a well defined transfer LUT to give you your deliverable. In either case monitoring on the LM-2461W will work for you.

The largest perceptual differences are likely going to have more to do with viewing environment and size differences than anything else.

Thanks Bram.
So how could i generate that transfer lut when working on the rec 709 workflow?.
Should i grade in rec709, then shift the color space to P3, create a LUT and then apply it to the whole project?
Wouldnt it be the same that grading at DCI P3 color space?
Or should i get the LUT from somewhere else??
About the projector, i still need to get one in the not so far future, i i been looking at something like the JVC DLA-X90R. Do you think there would be a lot of difference in color when i put it together with flanders?

Diego, if you are working with in cooperation with a third-party facility that does a lot of DCI work they will often have a well defined workflow allowing you to provide a Rec 709 deliverable that they then apply the proper transfer to. The LM-2461W and many other LCD monitors have a DCI P3 mode, but keep in mind that this specification is really optimized for projection environments and projection technology. You can, and we do have customers that do so, operate in DCI P3 mode the whole way, but based on the feedback we get it is still not the most common workflow for a wide variety of reasons.

I can't really comment on how well the projector you mention will match an LM-2461W as I've never personally used it. What I can comment on is the feedback we get from 2461W users that find it offers an extremely close match to some of the most popular very high-end ($50,000+) DI projectors. We do have customers that color grade entire theatrical release projects on an LM-2461W and then when viewed on one of these top of the line DI projectors find no need to alter their content at all. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that a lower cost projector probably is not going to match these high-end DI projectors better simply because it is also a projector.

Do you think that a lower end projector could be matched to my LM-2461W with THXCinespace?
Sorry to be annoying about the projector, but we want to build a second color correction suite, more film finishing oriented, and people is asking for a projection room. And we obviously cant afford a high end projector.

Hello Walter,

I was checking this video again i was wondering wich is the best way to go when grading for a DPC finished film. In the video, Dan says that a LCD monitor could never be completely matched to a proyector because they are different technologies.

So, the workflow i been thinking to use if i get into grade a film for DPC screening, is to do all the grading in the FSI and then do a last quality check of the whole movie, projected in a 2k projector.
But if the difference is too noticeable between the Monitored and the projected image, it makes sense to do all the grading in the projector straight away.
I have no projector, but thinking into getting a JVC that looks ok.
Other way would be to apply a corrected LUT to the whole film if it shows a clear difference.
